Mastodon, also known as the Mastodon Project, represents a decentralized distributed microblogging social network. Its official iOS app, designed for Apple devices, brings the Mastodon experience to the mobile platform. The app mirrors the user interface and functionality of Twitter, but Mastodon distinguishes itself by operating on a decentralized model. Unlike traditional social media platforms, Mastodon is not governed by a single entity; instead, it consists of multiple independently operated servers that exchange data in a federated manner, forming a decentralized social network. Each Mastodon-operated server is referred to as an 'instance,' and users can register on any open instance. Users on one instance can seamlessly communicate with users on other instances. In contrast to Twitter, Mastodon positions itself as a network of independently operated small communities, fostering community-based moderation and service operations. These communities can collaborate without interdependence. Similar to Twitter, Mastodon supports the exchange of private messages between users. However, Mastodon introduces the concept of 'toots' as opposed to tweets, allowing users to make their posts private, restrict them to followers, make them public to a specific instance, or broadcast them across the entire instance network. The Mastodon iOS app offers a familiar experience for users who appreciate the functionality of traditional centralized social media. Users can follow others, view posts on a chronological timeline, share text, images, and multimedia, as well as engage in polls. Mastodon's core philosophy emphasizes decentralization, providing users with an alternative to centralized social media platforms.
